Summary

We are seeking two or more temporary Research Assistants to join the DOORStep research team, which is evaluating the effectiveness and acceptability of free door to door transport to increase the uptake of breast screening appointments. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated researcher to join a highly experienced team funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research (Increasing the uptake of breast screening appointments in Yorkshire - Yorkshire Cancer Research).

These positions will be based within the Hull and East Yorkshire area, where the successful candidates will work with Dr Charlotte Kelly (Chief Investigator) to deliver the DOORStep research study. The post holders will be employed by the University of Hull and will be accountable to, and report to, Dr Charlotte Kelly. They will also have an honorary contract with Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Working hours will be ad-hoc, covering the times when women registered at the GP practices selected to participate in the study are attending their breast screening appointments. This could mean working for several days/weeks at one location followed by a break before being required again over a period of six to eight months. There will be some flexibility as long as the required cover is provided at the screening locations. Weekday hours will generally fall between 830am and 430pm. There may be an occasional requirement to work on Saturday mornings.

Successful candidates will work at various breast screening locations in the Hull and East Yorkshire area. As such we would welcome applications from candidates who live locally to the area, or within a practicable travelling distance. There will be a requirement to travel from the screening location to the University of Hull at regular intervals.

Eight GP practices have been selected to be part of the DOORStep study, with the intervention arm receiving the offer of a free taxi service to attend their appointment and the control arm being asked to complete a travel survey. The successful applicants will be sited at the breast screening locations which could be a hospital or an external screening location, such as a supermarket car park and there will be a requirement to work outdoors at some sites.

The focus of the role is to distribute questionnaires (travel surveys) to women attending their breast screening appointment. There are multiple options for women to complete the travel surveys:

• On paper and posted in a box at the screening location

• On paper and posted back in a free post envelope

• Electronically accessed using a website/ QR code

• Electronically using an iPad at the screening site

The assistant will encourage women to complete the survey in their preferred format and, if necessary, assist them in doing so.  More information on the programme of research can be found here:

DOORstep (hull.ac.uk)

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the study websites and to contact Dr Charlotte Kelly (Chief Investigator) at Charlotte.Kelly@hyms.ac.uk for an informal discussion.

Applicants are required to submit a current CV and covering letter.
