At University of Hull, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world's talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in University of Hull workplace. These include people from global majority backgrounds; people who have a declared disability; LGBTQI+ people; and women particularly for our Grade 9 and 10 roles. We reserve the right to close the advert early if a satisfactory amount of applications are received
This is an 8-month, fixed-term contract, in which the appointed person will become part of a larger interdisciplinary team of researchers investigating health inequalities in cancer care. The FORALL research project aims to develop ways to engage with underrepresented women living with and beyond breast cancer to manage their weight. Although more women are surviving breast cancer, there are differences in survival related to where patients live and their ethnic origin. Additionally, poor lifestyle behaviours like inactivity for example, increases the risk of obesity which may contribute to worse outcomes. It is reported that people with excess weight can have an increased risk of treatment complications, side effects, poor quality of life and comorbid illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease. Several organisations recommend that those living with and beyond cancer should be supported with weight management. However, research studies exploring weight management have often included well-educated, white populations. There is an urgent need for interventions that are appropriate and culturally-relevant for underrepresented groups, including South Asian, Black African and Caribbean communities, and people from more deprived areas.
This study is funded by a NIHR Programme Development Grant. The post will be based in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences (SERS), University of Hull. SERS is a thriving academic community within the Faculty of Health Sciences. Supported by technical staff, our team of around 30 academic staff teach over 400 students, including postgraduates studying MSc by Research, or PhDs. The availability of state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, supported by dedicated technical staff provides an outstanding educational experience for students and excellent opportunities to engage in high-quality research and knowledge exchange.
The role would suit an applied health researcher with qualitative research experience and PhD (or close to PhD completion) in a relevant discipline. An understanding of exercise, nutrition, cancer research, community engagement and/or inequalities is desirable.
