The successful candidate will join a diverse research team in the newly formed Energy and Environment Institute and the post holder will also have opportunity to integrate with the wider University Schools and Faculties. Research conducted in the Institute is multi-faceted, covering both discovery-led and challenge-led research, with an international reputation for excellence and a commitment to delivering impact and working towards solving global challenges.

The University of Hull, as an ‘anchor’ institution, is strategically committed to the energy and environment sectors.  With the recent appointment of Professor Daniel Parsons as the Institute Director, with the strategic objective to establish the Institute as a recognised world-leading centre of excellence in energy and environment research, the University is committed to bringing together its substantial academic expertise (ca 70 academics) working across the faculties of Science and Engineering, Arts, Cultures and Education, Health Sciences and Business, Law and Politics. Collectively, this area generates a significant portion of the University's research income, and was ranked 3rdnationally for research impact.

The post-holder will work with the Institute Director, and a team of researchers and Institute-affiliated academic staff, and will lead on a strand of research facing challenges related to flooding and flood risk in a changing climate. The post-holder will be required to support the PI in delivering projects across the institute’s focus areas and developing their own portfolio of research projects. They will be required to support the wider strategic aims and projects within the institute and assist the director in supporting the research team and aid project outcomes across the institute, mentoring more junior members of the team.

Applicants should have a BSc and a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. ocean sciences, physical geography, earth sciences, geology, or engineering). Applicants for this post will have a strong background in one or all of flooding, morphodynamics, hydrology, sediment transport and laboratory modelling/experimentation, numerical modelling.

A strong technical background in executing laboratory experiments, field data collection or numerical modelling of geophysical flows is essential. A proven ability to analyse large complex datasets through programming routines in high-level languages (e.g. Matlab, Python, C+) and experience of GIS is also a distinct advantage. The applicant must also have excellent scientific communication, presentation and writing skills, as well as very good critical and analytical problem solving skills. The post holder will have excellent time management skills and be able to work to deadlines and function effectively under pressure, and should have an excellent track record in publishing in high quality journal papers.

We also welcome candidates that hold externally-funded research fellowships (or in the process of application) that can be brought to the University of Hull.  Examples of substantive research fellowships include: EPSRC Early Career Fellowships, Royal Society University Research Fellowships and European Research Council Starting Grants.
