The University of Hull (UoH) is part of a project funded by Research England to promote the development of a bioeconomy across Yorkshire, the Humber region and the Tees Valley.   The bioeconomy uses biological resources for economic purposes including food, energy generation and also as components in manufacturing complex materials.  The fast-growing bioeconomy represents a major economic opportunity for the UK and particularly for the North of England, which has world-class bioeconomy assets.  The THYME Project will establish a new and highly innovative collaboration between the universities of York, Hull and Teesside that will become an exemplar for good practice in Knowledge Exchange between HEIs and industry, attracting trade and inward investment into sustainable bio-based industries and our HEIs.   The three fields of activity covered by the project are 1) Transforming bio-residues into materials for re-use; 2) Increasing the productivity of existing bioeconomy activities in the region; 3) repurposing disused land for bioeconomy activity.  The post will explore the impact of a migration to bio-plastics on the wider bioeconomy.   

The post holder will be primarily involved in exploring the impact of a transition to bio-polymers on policy, social and economic foundations of the regional bioeconomy. The post holder will be expected to develop publications for the dissemination of findings for both academic and non-academic audiences.  S/he will need to work closely with the other PDRAs involved in the project and with colleagues in chemical engineering and human and physical geography to collate understanding on stakeholder impacts. They will need to undertake data analytics and data mining activities and explore the unintended consequences of transitions. The post holder will be required work with the project manager and administrator to proactively engage with business and stakeholders and help communicate and disseminate the project.   The post holder will also be required to present research progress on a monthly basis and to write regular progress reports.

The post will be based in the Energy and Environment Institute but will involve collaboration with colleagues from across the university and the other partner universities.   In addition, there will be opportunities to proactively engage with other plastics related research.  For instance, a large EPSRC funded Plastics Collaboratory and an EU-funded international PhD-training network relating to the circular economy.  Geography and Environmental studies research was ranked 3rd in the UK for its impact in Research Excellence Framework 2014.
