The Sustainability & Environmental Manager is a critical role in the Estates and Facilities Directorate, providing leadership and direction for all matters relating to the strategic and operational delivery across the Sustainability programme, set within an Estates & Facilities context. 

It is an exciting time for the team, as we drive improvements in compliance, efficiency, customer service and performance as well as creating the opportunity to gain competitive advantages through our activity-underpinned by a significant investment in the Estate in conjunction with a full modernisation programme across the team’s systems and processes. The post holder will also play a critical role in the successful achievement of our stated ambition of becoming the first truly Carbon Neutral University in the UK, by 2027.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Estates, the Sustainability & Environmental Manager will be an experienced, motivated, proven professional with expertise in leading and driving change from a Sustainability stand point.  

The postholder will lead a team of 5 (4 fte) and will have experience in being a key part of a large Estates and Facilities Directorate senior management team. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate significant experience and a high level of skill in the development of sustainability strategies and delivery of associated physical and behavioral change management projects and have a detailed understanding of relevant legislation, policy, guidance and funding sources.

Specifically, the postholder will:

  • lead and promote sustainability functions and activities through the development and implementation of a sustainability strategy, a major element of which is to deliver the vision of becoming a carbon neutral University by 2027.
  • lead the delivery of a high quality and value for money environmental services function across a large and complex estate ensuring it is carried out efficiently and within all available resources.
