Are you passionate about solving the challenges of the oceans in the 21st Century? Are you passionate about data? Are you excited about working on projects that analyse gigabytes of satellite images?

The availability of high quality, free-to-access satellite data from the European Union’s Copernicus programme has the potential to transform marine science, giving views of the ocean at a scale and frequency not previously possible. Funded by Horizon 2020, the ‘Datacube Services for Copernicus’ project ( will develop satellite image-based services for a range of marine and maritime users particularly in the renewable energy sector. An opportunity is open to work at the University of Hull using state-of-the-art high performance computing (@HULL_HPC_VIPER) to automate image processing, build DataCubes, and create products. You will work in the Department of Biology and Marine Sciences with an experienced project team combining marine biology, physics and offshore engineering in Project Aura ( 

You will lead the development of automated data processing for the east coast region of the UK to deliver analysis-ready data and tailor-made products and services for a range of maritime users. In a fast-moving field, you will use you knowledge and network to keep up-to-date with latest developments in the processing and use of satellite data, particularly Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2. You will liase with other project partners and be able to demonstrate the benefits of the project’s services to customers.

The knowledge and qualifications that you will have are:

  • An analytical and numerical background with a good degree, and working towards a PhD in a subject such as Computer Science / Remote Sensing / Information Technology / Maths / Physics / Image Processing or related subjects.
  • Strong numeracy, programming and developmental skills, and ability to exploit published scientific literature and technical reports if needed
  • Knowledge of parallel processing and parallelization of code; specifically to build a data processing pipeline to pre-process satellite optical and radar images.


  • Prior knowledge of coastal physical processes and such as waves and currents, or biological processes such as primary production would be advantageous.
  • Detailed knowledge of appropriate image processing / remote sensing software, e.g. ESA-SNAP, Acolite, Erdas Imagine

The skills and experience that we would like are:


  • Experience working on complex datasets to enable work on our DataCube and its User Interface, currently built using Python and particularly the libraries xcube, pandas and xarray.
  • Experience with geospatial data, especially gridded data (e.g. NetCDF4, GeoTIFF, zarr)
  • Ability to learn quickly and work as a team, be proud of your work, show respect for colleagues, be able to travel within Europe to represent the project, and have good communication skills.

The additional skills and experience that we would see as desirable for later stages of the work are:

  • Experience in artificial intelligence / deep learning / image classification
  • Experience in web delivery of data and services
