Assessment and Progression Officer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assessment and Progression Officer to join the Hull York Medical School. Our medical school is one of the UK’s most exciting contemporary schools, offering innovative and rigorous undergraduate and postgraduate medical and healthcare education. A collaboration between the Universities of Hull and York and the NHS, we work across University campuses, teaching hospitals and medical practices throughout the Yorkshire, Humber and North Lincolnshire regions – producing excellent doctors who are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to exceed in an ever changing NHS landscape. 

The Assessment and Progression Officer will play a key operational role is ensuring the provision of a high quality learning, teaching and assessment experience for all its students, including the delivery of all forms of formative and summative assessment.  The modes of assessment are many and varied and take place in many different environments, including but not restricted to: e-portfolio; written examinations; clinical, practical and lab based assessments; online and national examinations. Ongoing developments of all curricula commits the Medical School to an ambitious programme of innovations in formative and summative assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

The role is challenging and requires you to have advanced skills and knowledge of how to develop high quality fair and consistent assessment across a wide portfolio of programmes. You must be willing to work flexibly and creatively, both independently and as part of a team, in a highly demanding environment.  You are required to have excellent communication skills and provide a professional, visible and proactive service to support the school’s staff and students, developing credibility and trust with a wide range of stakeholders.  

The Assessment and Progression Officer is the team leader for the Assessment and Progression Team (APT). Therefore you should be an operational leader who is able to inspire confidence in and engage with a wide range of staff. It is important that you have an awareness of the rapidly developing national agenda in medical assessments through the Medical Schools’ Council – Assessment Alliance. You will have strong IT fluency including skills in setting up and using databases, corporate and ‘in-house systems’. You will be able to undertake research and perform detailed analysis, manipulation and interpretation of specialised data. You will have strong experience of organising and leading large and small scale formative and summative assessment methods.   

This role requires a willingness to comply with holiday restrictions and to work occasional unsocial hours including evenings and weekends at peak times. The successful candidate will be based predominately at either the University of Hull or University of York, with regular weekly travel between the two campuses, and travel to meetings, and other events and clinical placement provider sites as required.
