This post requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

This post has become available as part of a TRANSFORM Pump Priming funded project: AT RISK Bowel Screening: Attitudes Towards Risk-stratified Bowel Screening. The post will be hosted by the Cancer Awareness, Screening and Diagnostic Pathways (CASP) Research Group. Dr Jo Cairns is the lead investigator for the project which represents collaboration between researchers in the Universities of Hull and Edinburgh.

Bowel cancer screening is currently offered to 56-74 year olds in England. It helps with earlier detection of bowel cancer and saves thousands of lives per year. There have been growing calls in the UK to adapt national cancer screening programmes to take account of people’s personal risk of developing cancer. This project will explore attitudes towards risk-stratified bowel cancer screening from the perspective of those eligible for screening and healthcare professionals. The findings from this study will inform a larger programme of work which will consider the wider implications of risk-stratification and what organisational changes would be required if such an approach was to be implemented.

The project will involve the use of online focus groups. The appointed candidate will be responsible for drafting research materials, applying for ethical approval, conducting focus groups, analysing data and drafting papers for publication. This post is suitable for pre-doctoral (Band 6). Prior experience of qualitative research is essential for this role. Knowledge of NVivo software would be desirable but not essential as training can be provided for the right candidate.

Interviews are expected to take place virtually on Thursday 16 December 2021.

To discuss this role informally, please contact Dr Jo Cairns joanne.cairns@hyms.ac.uk
